What is Addition?

  • Addition means combining two or more numbers to find the total.
  • The symbol for addition is '+' (plus).
  • The answer in addition is called the **sum**.

Properties of Addition

  • Changing the order of numbers does not change the sum. (Commutative Property)
  • Adding 0 to any number gives the same number.
  • Adding 1 to any number gives the next number (successor).

Addition Without Carry Over

  • When the sum of digits in any column is less than 10, no carry over is needed.
  • Add ones first, then tens, then hundreds.

Addition With Carry Over

  • When the sum of digits in a column is 10 or more, we carry over the extra to the next column.
  • 10 ones = 1 ten, so we carry 1 to the tens column.
  • 10 tens = 1 hundred, so we carry 1 to the hundreds column.
