What is Subtraction?

  • Subtraction means taking away one number from another.
  • The bigger number is called the minuend, the number being taken away is the subtrahend, and the answer is called the difference.
  • We use the minus sign (–) for subtraction.

Properties of Subtraction

  • Changing the order of numbers changes the answer. So, subtraction is not commutative.
  • Subtracting 0 from any number gives the same number.
  • Subtracting 1 from a number gives its predecessor (the number just before it).

Subtraction Without Borrowing

  • Used when each digit in the top number is greater than or equal to the digit below it.
  • Subtract column by column: ones, then tens, then hundreds.
  • No borrowing is needed in this method.

Subtraction With Borrowing (Regrouping)

  • Used when a digit in the top number is smaller than the digit below it.
  • We borrow 1 from the next higher place value.
  • 1 ten = 10 ones, 1 hundred = 10 tens.
