Card 1States of Water

What are the three states of water?

Answer

The three states of water are solid (ice), liquid (water), and gas (water vapour or steam). Ice is hard and cold, water flows, and steam is invisible gas we see as mist when boiling.

Card 2Changing States of Water

What happens when ice is heated?

Answer

When ice is heated, it melts and changes into liquid water. This process is called melting. For example, ice in a glass turns into water after some time in the sun.

Card 3Changing States of Water

What is evaporation?

Answer

Evaporation is when water changes into vapour or gas due to heat. For example, wet clothes dry in the sun because water evaporates into the air.

Card 4Changing States of Water

What is condensation?

Answer

Condensation is when water vapour cools and changes back into liquid water. For example, water droplets form on the outside of a cold glass.

Card 5Changing States of Water

What is freezing?

Answer

Freezing is when water is cooled to 0°C and turns into ice. This is also called solidification. For example, water in a freezer becomes ice cubes.

Why does water have no fixed shape?

Answer

Water takes the shape of its container because it is a liquid. For example, in a cup it is cup-shaped, in a bottle it is bottle-shaped.

Card 7Physical Properties of Water

What are the physical properties of water?

Answer

Water is colourless, tasteless, and has no smell. It has no fixed shape and can exist as solid (ice), liquid (water), or gas (steam).

Card 8Water and Solutions

A solution is a mixture where one substance dissolves in another. For example, sugar dissolves in water to make sugar solution.
