Need for Measurement

  • We measure things to compare their size, length, weight, or how much they can hold.
  • Without measurement, it would be difficult to buy the right amount of cloth, milk, or vegetables.
  • Ancient people used body parts like hand span, foot span, and cubit to measure length, but these are not accurate because everyone’s body is different.

Measurement of Length

  • Length tells us how long something is.
  • Standard unit of length is metre (m).
  • Smaller lengths are measured in centimetres (cm) and millimetres (mm).

Measurement of Mass (Weight)

  • Mass tells us how heavy an object is.
  • Standard units: gram (g) and kilogram (kg).
  • Light objects are measured in grams, heavy objects in kilograms.

  • Standard units: litre (L) and millilitre (mL).
  • Large amounts of liquid are measured in litres, small amounts in millilitres.
