Picnic

Step 1: A file name has two parts separated by a dot. Step 2: The part before the dot is called the primary name — it is the name given to the file related to its content. Step 3: The part after the dot is called the secondary name or extension, which tells us the file type. Step 4: In 'Picnic.docx', 'Picnic' is the primary name and '.docx' is the secondary name (extension). Step 5: The extension 'doc' alone is not a complete extension — the full extension is '.docx'.

Copying a file

Step 1: There are different file operations in a computer. Step 2: Copying a file means making a duplicate copy of a document without removing the original. Step 3: Moving a file transfers it from one location to another (original is removed from source). Step 4: Deleting removes the file, and searching looks for a file. Step 5: Copying is useful when you want to keep the original file safe and also use it in another location.

Destination drive

Step 1: When copying a file, two drives are involved — source and destination. Step 2: The source drive is where the original file is stored (where the file is copied FROM). Step 3: The destination drive is where the copy of the file is sent (where the file is copied TO). Step 4: In this example, the hard disk is the source drive and the pen drive is the destination drive. Step 5: If the direction was reversed (pen drive to hard disk), then pen drive would be the source and hard disk would be the destination.

Cut and Paste

Step 1: Moving a file is different from copying a file. Step 2: When you move a file, it is removed from its original location and placed in a new location. Step 3: In Windows, this is done using the 'Cut' and 'Paste' option. Step 4: 'Copy and Paste' keeps the original file at the source and also places a copy at the destination — this is NOT moving. Step 5: 'Delete and Restore' removes a file and then brings it back, and 'Search and Open' is for finding and opening files — neither is used for moving.
