  • Modals are helping verbs.
  • They do not change form (no -s, -ing, -ed).
  • They are always followed by a main verb.
  • Permission: may, can, could
  • Ability: can, could
  • Suggestion/Advice: should, ought to
  • May, can, could are used to ask for or give permission.
  • Can and could show ability in the present and past.
  • Should and ought to are used for advice or suggestions.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Can and may are interchangeable when asking for permission.

Must and have to mean the same thing and can be used interchangeably.

Could is only the past tense of can, and cannot be used in the present.

Modals never change form and need a main verb

May for permission (formal), Can for informal, Could for polite
