  • A magnet is a substance that attracts iron, nickel, and cobalt.
  • Natural magnets are found in nature, like lodestone (magnetite).
  • Artificial magnets are made by humans and come in shapes like bar, U-shaped, and horseshoe.

2. Magnetic and Non-Magnetic Substances

  • Magnetic substances: Attracted by magnets (e.g., iron, nickel, cobalt).
  • Non-magnetic substances: Not attracted by magnets (e.g., wood, plastic, copper).
  • Magnetic substances are also called ferromagnetic materials.

3. Properties of Magnets

  • A freely suspended magnet always points in the north-south direction.
  • Like poles repel (N-N or S-S), unlike poles attract (N-S).
  • Magnetic poles always exist in pairs — cannot be isolated.

4. Magnetic Field and Earth's Magnetism

  • The area around a magnet where its force can be felt is called the magnetic field.
  • Magnetic field lines go from North pole to South pole.
  • Earth behaves like a giant magnet with its magnetic south near geographic north.
