What is Matter?
- Matter is anything that has mass and occupies space.
- All living and non-living things are made of matter.
- Examples: book, water, air, milk, iron, wood, oxygen.
Composition of Matter
- Matter is made up of tiny particles called molecules.
- Each molecule is made of one or more atoms.
- Ancient Indian philosopher Maharishi Kanada proposed the idea of 'anu' and 'parmanu' — the smallest particles.
Characteristics of Particles of Matter
- Particles of matter are very small in size.
- There are spaces between particles (intermolecular space).
- Particles are always moving — this is called random motion.
States of Matter
- There are three states of matter: Solid, Liquid, and Gas.
- Solids have fixed shape and volume.
- Liquids have fixed volume but take the shape of the container.
