1. Consumer in the Marketplace
- Consumers buy goods and services for personal use.
- In a market, consumers are often weaker than sellers because they buy in small amounts and are scattered.
- Unfair trade practices include short weighing, charging hidden costs, selling adulterated goods, and giving false information.
2. Consumer Movement and COPRA
- The consumer movement in India began in organised form in the 1960s because of food shortages, hoarding, black marketing, and adulteration.
- Till the 1970s, consumer organisations mainly wrote articles and held exhibitions.
- The UN adopted Guidelines for Consumer Protection in 1985, which became the international foundation of the movement.
3. Six Rights of Consumers
- Right to safety protects consumers against goods and services hazardous to life and property.

- The National Commission in New Delhi held the hospital responsible for medical negligence and directed payment of compensation.
