Discus Throw — Practice Quiz

Jurgen Schult

Jurgen Schult from Germany holds the men's world record in discus throw with a distance of 74.08 meters, set in 1986. This record has remained unbeaten for decades, making it one of the longest-standing records in athletics. Vikas Gowda (Option B) holds the Indian national record. Virgilijus Alekna (Option C) holds the Olympic record. Yuri Damchev (Option D) held the previous world record before Schult broke it.

66.28 meters

Vikas Gowda's personal best throw is 66.28 meters, achieved in April 2012 at Oklahoma in the discus throw challenge. This throw erased his previous personal best of 64.96 meters (Option B). This distance also represents the Indian national record. Options C and D are incorrect distances that don't match his actual personal best performance. This achievement placed him among the top discus throwers globally in the 2012 season.

2010

Krishna Poonia won the gold medal at the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games on October 11, 2010, with a throw of 61.51 meters, which was also a new national record. She became the first Indian female athlete to win gold in track and field events at the Commonwealth Games. This was a historic achievement, coming 52 years after Milkha Singh's gold in 1958. Options B, C, and D represent incorrect years for this specific achievement.

The throw is declared a foul

If the discus makes its initial mark on or outside the sector lines, the throw is declared a foul. For a valid throw, the discus must land completely within the sector boundaries. This is one of the key rules in discus throw competition. Option B is incorrect because no measurement is taken for foul throws. Option C is wrong as athletes don't get extra attempts for fouls. Option D is incorrect because there's no penalty system - foul throws simply don't count.
