Social And Religious Reform Movements

Dayananda Saraswati

Dayananda Saraswati gave the slogan 'Back to the Vedas' as part of his reform movement through Arya Samaj. He believed that the Vedas were the source of all truth and knowledge, and that returning to Vedic principles would help reform Hindu society. This was different from other reformers: Raja Ram Mohan Roy focused on monotheism and social reforms, Swami Vivekananda emphasized practical Vedanta and service, and Ramakrishna Paramahamsa believed in the equality of all religions.

Atmaram Panduranga

Atmaram Panduranga established the Prarthana Samaj in Mumbai. The organization was founded on the principle that 'service to mankind is service to God.' While M.G. Ranade popularized the Prarthana Samaj and became its most famous leader, he was not the founder. Gopal Krishna Gokhale and Bal Gangadhar Tilak were prominent freedom fighters and social reformers but were not associated with founding Prarthana Samaj.

Jyotiba Phule

Mahatma Jyotiba Phule founded the Satyashodhak Samaj, which worked for social justice and opposed caste discrimination, gender inequality, and untouchability. Phule believed freedom was essential for every individual and advocated free and compulsory education. While B.R. Ambedkar was influenced by Phule's principles, he came later. Periyar led the Self-Respect Movement, and Shahu Maharaj supported Satyashodhak Samaj but did not found it.

Anglo-Oriental College (later Aligarh Muslim University)

Sir Syed Ahmed Khan started the Anglo-Oriental College to provide modern education to the Muslim community, combining religious education with Western education. This college was later renamed as Aligarh Muslim University. His goal was to create a modern Muslim society through Western education while preserving Islamic values. The other institutions - Jamia Millia Islamia, Darul Uloom Deoband, and Calcutta Madrassa - were established by other educationists and served different purposes in Muslim education.
