Development of Physical Education in India after Independence

1961

The National Institute of Sports (NIS) was established in 1961. It evolved from the Rajkumari Amrit Kaur Sports Coaching Scheme that started in 1958. The transformation to NIS happened in 1961 based on recommendations of the Central Advisory Board for Physical Education and Recreation. 1959 was when NPED started, and 1963 was when Kunzru Committee submitted its report.

National Physical Education Drive

NPED stands for National Physical Education Drive. It was a plan involving the preparation of a physical fitness qualification exam that came into force in 1959-60. It was prepared by the Central Advisory Board for Physical Education and Recreation. The other expansions are incorrect and were not part of the historical development of physical education in India.

1992

In 1992, the Central government in its new National Education Policy confirmed Physical Education as an integral part of total education. This was a significant milestone in recognizing the importance of physical education. 1993 was when the K.P. Singh Dev committee was constituted, but the policy confirmation happened in 1992.

Major General G.K. Bhosle

Major General G.K. Bhosle introduced the National Discipline Scheme (NDS) on the advice of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. While Nehru advised it, Bhosle actually introduced and implemented the scheme. Dr. P.M. Joseph led the National College of Physical Education, and Rajkumari Amrit Kaur was associated with the sports coaching scheme.
