Mandya

Mandya is known as the 'Sugar City' of Karnataka because the first modern sugar industry 'Mysuru Sugar Company' was established here in 1933. The city is located in the Cauvery river basin which provides ideal conditions for sugarcane cultivation and sugar production. Mysuru is nearby but not specifically called the sugar city. Belagavi is called the sugar district due to having many sugar factories, but Mandya holds the title of sugar city. The availability of water, favorable climate, and good transport connections made Mandya ideal for sugar industry development.

Dandeli

The West Coast Paper Mill is located at Dandeli. This private company was established after the first paper mill at Bhadravathi. Dandeli was chosen because of the thick forest area providing bamboo and eucalyptus trees for pulp, water from the Kali river, and electricity from Jog falls. Bhadravathi has the Mysuru Paper Mill Limited which was the first paper mill. Nanjangud and Mundagod also have paper mills but not the West Coast Paper Mill. The location of Dandeli in the Western Ghats provides ideal forest resources for paper production.

1902

The hydro-electric power generation station was started at Shivanasamudra in 1902. This was a significant milestone as it provided electricity that enabled the establishment of many industries producing essential goods and daily use products. After this power generation started, industries like rice mills, tile factories, beedis and cigarettes, iron and brass foundries were established. The year 1902 marked the beginning of industrial electrification in Karnataka. The other years mentioned are incorrect - 1900 was too early, while 1905 and 1910 were after the actual establishment.

Belagavi

Belagavi district is known as the 'Sugar District' of Karnataka because it has the highest number of sugar factories in the state. While Mandya is called the 'Sugar City' for having the first sugar factory, Belagavi district has more sugar factories overall. Mysuru district also has sugar factories but not as many as Belagavi. Bagalkot also has several sugar factories but fewer than Belagavi. The Krishna river basin in Belagavi district provides ideal conditions for sugarcane cultivation, leading to the establishment of numerous sugar factories.
