Evolution of Money
- Money evolved through five stages: Barter System → Commodity Money → Metallic Money → Paper Money → Bank Money
- Barter System had major limitations: lack of double coincidence of wants, no common measure of value, indivisibility problems, and difficulty in storing wealth
- Commodity Money used items like cattle, sheep, or teeth as medium of exchange in different regions
Functions of Money
- Primary Functions: Medium of Exchange (buying/selling goods) and Measure of Value (expressing all values in money terms)
- Secondary Functions: Standard of Deferred Payments (future payments), Store of Value (saving for future), Transfer of Value (moving purchasing power across places)
- Contingent Functions: Basis of Credit (enables banking system) and Increases Productivity of Capital (efficient capital allocation)
Types of Credit
- Two main types: Informal Credit Sector and Formal Credit Sector
- Informal Credit includes indigenous bankers: Shroffs, Mahajans, Shets, Sahukars, Chettis (money lenders)
- Indigenous banking was central to Indian financial system until mid-19th century
Banks and Banking System
- Term 'Bank' derived from Italian 'Banco' (bench) or German 'Banck' (joint stock fund)
- Banking Regulation Act 1949 defines banking as accepting deposits for lending/investment
- Types: Industrial Banks, Exchange Banks, Savings Banks, Co-operative Banks, Land Mortgage Banks
