Meaning and Nature of Human Geography
- Human geography studies the relationship between the physical or natural world and the human world.
- It also studies the spatial distribution of human phenomena and the social and economic differences between different parts of the world.
- Geography is integrative, empirical, and practical.
Definitions of Human Geography
- Ratzel defined human geography as the synthetic study of the relationship between human societies and the earth’s surface.
- Ellen C. Semple defined human geography as the study of the changing relationship between the unresting man and the unstable earth.
- Paul Vidal de la Blache described human geography as a new conception based on synthetic knowledge of the physical laws governing the earth and the relations between living beings inhabiting it.
Naturalisation of Humans and Humanisation of Nature
- At a very low level of technological development, humans were strongly influenced by nature and adapted to it.
- This stage is called environmental determinism.
- A naturalised human listened to nature, feared its fury, and worshipped it.
Neodeterminism or Stop and Go Determinism
- Griffith Taylor introduced Neodeterminism as a middle path between environmental determinism and possibilism.
- It is also called stop and go determinism.
- The traffic light example explains the idea clearly: red means stop, amber means get set, and green means go.
