Coordinate Geometry

(5, 0), (-2, 0), (0, 0)

Points on the x-axis have y-coordinate equal to 0. So (5, 0), (-2, 0), and (0, 0) all lie on the x-axis. Points with non-zero y-coordinates do not lie on the x-axis.

Abscissa

The x-coordinate of a point is also called the abscissa. It represents the perpendicular distance of the point from the y-axis measured along the x-axis.

The y-axis is vertical, not horizontal. All points on the y-axis have x-coordinate equal to 0. The y-axis divides the coordinate plane into left and right halves. It is not called the ordinate axis - ordinate refers to the y-coordinate of a point.

The ordinate is another name for the y-coordinate. In the point (-3, 5), the y-coordinate is 5, so the ordinate is 5.
