What to Focus On
- One reference line is NOT enough to locate a point uniquely in a plane.
- TWO perpendicular reference lines are required to locate any point in a plane.
- The two pieces of information must be independent (one for horizontal, one for vertical position).
- The X-axis is horizontal; the Y-axis is vertical. They are perpendicular to each other.
- The point where X-axis and Y-axis intersect is the Origin O = (0, 0).
- Quadrants are numbered I, II, III, IV in anticlockwise direction from the positive X-axis.
- Coordinates of a point are written as (x, y) — always x-coordinate FIRST.
- X-coordinate = Abscissa = perpendicular distance from Y-axis.
- Y-coordinate = Ordinate = perpendicular distance from X-axis.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
The coordinates of a point are written as (y, x) — ordinate first, then abscissa.
The x-coordinate is the distance from the x-axis, and the y-coordinate is the distance from the y-axis.
A point on the x-axis has coordinates (0, x), i.e., the first coordinate is 0.
Memory Tips
The Cartesian Plane — two perpendicular axes dividing the plane
X-axis is horizontal, Y-axis is vertical
Abscissa is the x-coordinate; Ordinate is the y-coordinate
Four Quadrants — their numbering and signs
