1. Human Activities and Economic Activities

  • All activities performed by human beings to satisfy their needs or wants are called Human Activities.
  • Human activities are divided into two broad categories: Economic Activities and Non-Economic Activities.
  • Economic Activities are those undertaken with the objective of earning money or livelihood. Examples: a farmer growing crops, a worker working in a factory, a businessman buying and selling goods.

2. Classification of Economic Activities – Business, Profession, and Employment

  • Business: Economic activity involving regular production or purchase of goods and services for sale, transfer, or exchange with the objective of earning PROFIT. Example: a shopkeeper, Tata Companies.
  • Profession: Economic activity requiring special knowledge, skill, and training. The reward is called a 'fee'. Example: doctor, lawyer, chartered accountant.
  • Employment: Economic activity where a person (employee) works for another (employer) under a contract of service for a wage or salary. Example: postman working for the Department of Posts.

3. Importance of Business

  • Business improves the standard of living by providing better quality and variety of goods and services.
  • It generates employment, which reduces poverty in the country.
  • It utilises scarce national resources and facilitates mass production.

4. Objectives of Business

  • Business objectives are what a business organisation wants to achieve over a specified time period.
  • Modern businesses do NOT have only one objective (profit). They have FIVE categories of objectives.
  • Economic Objectives: Earning adequate profit, exploring new markets, growth and expansion, innovation, optimal use of resources.
