Key Topics to Revise
7.1 Theories of Light
- Corpuscular theory (Newton, 1672): Light consists of massless particles called corpuscles; explains reflection but fails to explain why light is slower in denser media and cannot explain interference,
- Wave theory (Huygens, 1678): Light is a longitudinal mechanical wave propagating through ether; successfully explains reflection, refraction, interference, and diffraction but fails for propagation th
- Electromagnetic wave theory (Maxwell, 1864): Light is a transverse electromagnetic wave requiring no medium; explains all optical phenomena except photoelectric effect and Compton effect
7.2 Wave Nature of Light
- Wavefront: Locus of points vibrating in the same phase; always perpendicular to direction of ray propagation
- Types of wavefronts: (1) Spherical wavefront from point source at finite distance, (2) Plane wavefront from source at infinity or from parallel rays, (3) Cylindrical wavefront from linear source
- Huygens' Principle: Each point on a wavefront acts as source of secondary wavelets propagating at wave speed; envelope of these wavelets forms new wavefront
7.3 Interference
- Interference: Phenomenon where superposition of two light waves produces regions of maximum and minimum intensity (unlike incoherent addition)
- Condition for constructive interference (bright fringes): Phase difference φ = 0, 2π, 4π,... or path difference δ = nλ (n = 0,1,2,...)
- Condition for destructive interference (dark fringes): Phase difference φ = π, 3π, 5π,... or path difference δ = (2n-1)λ/2 (n = 1,2,3,...)
7.4 Diffraction
- Diffraction: Bending of waves around obstacles into geometrically shadowed region; occurs when obstacle size is comparable to wavelength
- Fresnel diffraction: Curved wavefront (from source at finite distance) is diffracted; difficult to analyze; lenses not necessary
- Fraunhofer diffraction: Plane wavefront (from source at infinity) is diffracted; easier to analyze; lenses used to produce parallel rays
