Ordered Pairs and Cartesian Products

  • An ordered pair (a,b) has a specific order where 'a' is the first element and 'b' is the second element
  • Two ordered pairs (a,b) and (c,d) are equal if and only if a = c and b = d
  • The order matters: (a,b) ≠ (b,a) unless a = b

Relations and Their Properties

  • A relation R from set A to set B is a subset of A × B
  • If (a,b) ∈ R, we write aRb (a is R-related to b)
  • Domain of R = set of all first elements of ordered pairs in R

  • Universal Relation: R = A × A (every element is related to every element)

  • Domain of function = set A
