  • Monosaccharides are simple sugars and cannot be hydrolysed further.
  • Glucose has 4 chiral centres and 16 stereoisomers.
  • Most biological sugars are D-sugars.
  • Lipids are hydrophobic and soluble in organic solvents.
  • Fatty acids are usually made from even-numbered carbon chains.
  • Fatty acids may be saturated or unsaturated.
  • Amino acids have amino, carboxyl, hydrogen, and R groups around the alpha-carbon.
  • There are 20 standard amino acids.
  • Amino acids show L and D forms due to chirality.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

All carbohydrates are mainly used as body fuel and nothing else.

Glucose is always a straight-chain molecule and never forms a ring.

Alpha and beta anomers are the same as D and L forms.
