  • Carbohydrates are aldehyde and ketone derivatives of polyhydric alcohols.
  • The general formula of monosaccharides is $C_n(H_2O)_n$.

2. Fatty Acids and Lipids

  • Lipids are hydrophobic and soluble in organic solvents.
  • Lipids are broadly classified into simple lipids and compound lipids.
  • Simple lipids include fats and waxes.

3. Amino Acids

  • Amino acids are the building blocks of proteins.
  • The general amino acid structure is NH2-C(H)(R)-COOH.
  • The central α-carbon is bonded to an amino group, carboxyl group, hydrogen, and R group.

4. Protein Structure

  • Proteins are made of amino acids linked by peptide bonds.
  • Proteins perform many roles such as catalysis, transport, support, and signalling.
  • Protein structure has four levels: primary, secondary, tertiary, and quaternary.
