Answer

Card 2Introduction to redox reactions

What is a redox reaction?

Answer

A redox reaction is a chemical reaction in which oxidation and reduction occur simultaneously. Example idea: one species loses electrons and another gains them in the same reaction.

Card 3Electron transfer concept

Define oxidation and reduction in terms of electron transfer.

Answer

Oxidation means loss of electrons. Reduction means gain of electrons. Example: Zn(s) → Zn²⁺(aq) + 2e⁻ is oxidation; Cu²⁺(aq) + 2e⁻ → Cu(s) is reduction.

Answer

Answer

Card 6Agents in redox reactions

What is an oxidising agent and what is a reducing agent?

Answer

An oxidising agent accepts electrons and causes oxidation of another species. A reducing agent donates electrons and causes reduction of another species. In Zn + Cu²⁺ → Zn²⁺ + Cu, Cu²⁺ is the oxidisin

Card 7Redox principle

Why are oxidation and reduction always linked in a redox reaction?

Answer

Electrons lost by one species must be gained by another species. Because charge is conserved, oxidation cannot happen alone without a simultaneous reduction.

Card 8
