- Reduction means removal of oxygen or electronegative element, or addition of hydrogen or electropositive element.
Oxidation number rules and special cases
- In free elements, oxidation number is zero.
- For a monoatomic ion, oxidation number equals its charge.
- Oxygen is usually −2 in compounds.
Reaction types in redox chemistry
- Redox reactions are classified as combination, decomposition, displacement, and disproportionation reactions.
- In a combination redox reaction, elemental substances combine to form one product.
- In a decomposition redox reaction, one compound breaks into simpler substances, at least one of which is elemental.
Key examples and comparative reactivity
- Zinc displaces copper from copper sulphate solution.
- Copper displaces silver from silver nitrate solution.
