Card 1Basic terms

What is a thermodynamic system?

Answer

A thermodynamic system is that part of the universe in which observations are made. The rest of the universe is the surroundings. The system and surroundings together make the universe.

Card 2

Answer

Card 3

Answer

Card 4Basic terms

What is the boundary of a system?

Answer

The boundary is the real or imaginary wall that separates the system from the surroundings. It helps track matter and energy transfer.

Card 5Types of systems

What is an open system? Give an example.

Answer

An open system exchanges both matter and energy with the surroundings. Example: reactants in an open beaker.

Card 6

Answer

Card 7

Answer

Card 8Types of systems

What is a closed system? Give an example.

Answer

A closed system exchanges energy but not matter with the surroundings. Example: reactants in a closed conducting vessel such as copper or steel.
