1. Basic thermodynamic terms

  • The universe is composed of the system plus the surroundings.
  • A system is that part of the universe in which observations are made.
  • Surroundings mean everything other than the system.

2. Internal energy, heat, work, and the first law

  • Internal energy is the total energy of the system, including chemical, electrical, and mechanical energy.
  • Internal energy changes when heat is transferred, work is done, or matter enters or leaves the system.
  • Work done on the system increases internal energy; work done by the system decreases it.

  • In chemistry, the most common work is pressure-volume work.
  • For expansion against constant external pressure, work is negative because the system does work on the surroundings.
  • For compression, work is positive because work is done on the system.

  • Enthalpy is a useful state function for reactions at constant pressure.
  • Enthalpy is defined as H = U + pV.
  • At constant pressure, heat absorbed by the system equals the enthalpy change.
