Mother's Day - J.B. Priestley

The play resolves the issue by making Mrs Pearson gain confidence and assert her authority. She teaches her family to respect her by refusing to serve them endlessly and by making them realise how selfish and foolish they have been.

The resolution is partly satisfactory because it restores balance in the family and gives the mother self-respect. But it is also a comic ending, so the change feels temporary and depends on Mrs Pearson’s new firmness. I agree with the message that mothers should be respected, though real change would need longer-lasting understanding from the whole family.

If written today, the play could include issues such as:

- Children and husbands being busy with phones, gadgets, or work and ignoring the mother’s efforts.
- Mothers handling household chores, online classes, office work, and childcare at the same time.
- Family members expecting the mother to manage meals, cleaning, shopping, and appointments without help.
- No sharing of domestic work between men and women.
- Lack of respect for a mother’s personal time, health, and privacy.
- The pressure on mothers to be perfect while others are not held responsible.

Relevant incidents might be a mother preparing food while everyone scrolls on phones, helping children with homework after her own workday, or being blamed when things are late even though others did not cooperate. The problems would still be about unequal division of labour, mental load, and lack of appreciation.
