  • Before expanding further, Genghis Khan reorganised the Mongols into a disciplined military force.
  • China was divided into Hsi Hsia in the northwest, Chin in the north, and Sung in the south.
  • By 1209, the Hsi Hsia were defeated.

  • The Mongol army was organised into decimal units of 10, 100, 1,000, and notionally 10,000.
  • The largest unit of 10,000 soldiers was called a tuman.
  • Captains of the confederacy were called noyan.
