1. Who the Mongols were and where they lived
- The Mongols were a diverse group linked by language and shared steppe life.
- Some Mongols were pastoralists and others were hunter-gatherers.

2. Early life of Genghis Khan and the rise to leadership
- Genghis Khan was born around 1162 near the Onon river.
- His birth name was Temujin.
- His father was Yesugei, the chieftain of the Kiyat.
3. Conquest and expansion under Genghis Khan
- Before expanding further, Genghis Khan reorganised the Mongols into a disciplined military force.
- China was divided into Hsi Hsia in the northwest, Chin in the north, and Sung in the south.
- By 1209, the Hsi Hsia were defeated.
4. Military organisation and communication
- The Mongol army was organised into decimal units of 10, 100, 1,000, and notionally 10,000.
- The largest unit of 10,000 soldiers was called a tuman.
- Captains of the confederacy were called noyan.
