Key Topics to Revise
1. Sequences and Their Terms
- A sequence is an arrangement of numbers in a definite order according to some rule.
- The terms of a sequence are written as a1, a2, a3, ..., an, where the subscript shows the position.
- The nth term is also called the general term of the sequence.
2. Series and Sigma Notation
- A series is the expression formed by adding the terms of a sequence.
- Sigma notation is a compact way to write a series.
- The expression a1 + a2 + a3 + ... + an is written as sum from k=1 to n of ak.
3. Geometric Progression and General Term
- A geometric progression is a sequence in which each term is non-zero and the ratio of a term to the previous term is constant.
- This constant ratio is called the common ratio and is denoted by r.
- If the first term is a, then the G.P. is written as a, ar, ar^2, ar^3, ...
4. Sum of n Terms of a G.P.
- The sum of the first n terms of a G.P. is written as S_n.
- There are two separate cases for the sum formula.
- If r = 1, then all terms are equal and S_n = na.
