Key Topics to Revise
1. Basics of Coordinate Geometry and Straight Lines
- René Descartes carried out a systematic study of geometry by the use of algebra in his book La Géométrie, published in 1637. This combination is called analytical geometry.
- A straight line in the coordinate plane can be represented algebraically in several forms.
- The chapter uses points, distance, section formula, midpoint, and area of triangle as tools for studying lines.
2. Slope and Inclination of a Line
- If θ is the inclination of a line, then tan θ is called the slope or gradient of the line.
- Slope is denoted by m.
- The inclination of a line lies between 0° and 180° inclusive.
3. Parallel and Perpendicular Lines; Angle Between Two Lines
- Two non-vertical lines are parallel if and only if their slopes are equal.
- Two non-vertical lines are perpendicular if and only if their slopes are negative reciprocals of each other.
- The acute angle between two lines depends on their slopes.
4. Equations of a Line in Different Forms
- A line can be written in several algebraic forms depending on the information given.
- The general linear equation is Ax + By + C = 0, where A and B are not zero simultaneously.
- Horizontal lines have equations y = a or y = -a depending on whether the line is above or below the x-axis.
