What is Symmetry?
- A shape or design is symmetrical when one half looks exactly like the other half
- When you fold a symmetrical shape along the line of symmetry, both halves match perfectly
- Symmetry can be found in nature (leaves, flowers, butterflies) and man-made objects (buildings, rangolis)
Lines of Symmetry in Shapes
- Different shapes have different numbers of lines of symmetry
- A circle has infinite lines of symmetry
- A square has 4 lines of symmetry (2 diagonal, 1 vertical, 1 horizontal)
Mirror Images and Reflections
- A mirror placed on the line of symmetry shows the complete shape
- Some numbers look the same in a mirror: 0, 1, 8
- Letters like A, H, I, M, O, T, U, V, W, X, Y look the same or similar in mirrors
Paper Folding and Cutting
- When you fold paper and cut it, the cuts appear symmetrically when unfolded
- One cut on folded paper creates two symmetric cuts when opened
- The position of cuts depends on where you fold the paper
