What to Focus On

  • A number can describe a pattern, not just a quantity.
  • In a line, neighbours mean left and right only.
  • In a table with more than one row, neighbours include left, right, top, and bottom.

  • A supercell is larger than all its adjacent cells.
  • Edge cells may have fewer neighbours.
  • In a multi-row table, up, down, left, and right all count as neighbours.

  • Digit sum is the sum of all digits in a number.
  • Different numbers can have the same digit sum.
  • There are nine 1-digit numbers: 1 to 9.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

A supercell is any number that looks large, even if one neighbour is larger.

In a table with more than one row, only left and right cells are neighbours.

A palindromic date and a repeating-digit date are the same thing.

Memory Tips

The chapter is about using numbers to tell things, find patterns, estimate, solve puzzles, and play games

There are nine 1-digit numbers

Digit sum stays the same for numbers like 68, 176, and 545

Digits of 68, 176, and 545 add to the same digit sum
