What to Focus On

  • Common multiples are numbers that are multiples of both numbers.
  • Common factors are numbers that divide both numbers exactly.
  • Factors of 24 are 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 12, 24.
  • Prime numbers have exactly two factors.
  • Composite numbers have more than two factors.
  • 1 is neither prime nor composite.
  • 1 is crossed out first.
  • Circle each new prime number.
  • Cross out all later multiples of that prime.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Any two numbers with no common factor in one chosen factorisation are co-prime.

If two numbers share one prime factor, then the smaller number always divides the larger number.

All even numbers are composite, so 2 is also composite.

Prime numbers have exactly two factors

Composite numbers have more than two factors

1 is neither prime nor composite

2 is the only even prime number
