1. Fractional Units and Equal Shares

  • When a whole is divided into equal parts, each part is a fractional unit or unit fraction.
  • In a fraction, the top number is the numerator and the bottom number is the denominator.
  • If one roti is shared equally between 2 children, each child gets half a roti.

2. Fractions as Parts of a Whole and on a Number Line

  • A fraction can represent a part of a whole object such as a roti, chikki, strip of paper, or a line segment.
  • Different shapes can show the same fraction if the whole is divided equally.
  • Fractions can be marked on a number line by dividing the segment from 0 to 1 into equal parts.

3. Mixed Fractions and Fractions Greater Than 1

  • A mixed number or mixed fraction contains a whole number part and a fractional part less than 1.
  • Fractions greater than 1 have a numerator larger than the denominator.
  • Fractions less than 1 have a numerator smaller than the denominator.

4. Equivalent Fractions and Lowest Terms

  • Equivalent fractions represent the same value or same share.
  • One roti shared among 4 children gives 1/4 to each child; 2 rotis among 8 children also give 1/4 to each child.
  • Equivalent fractions can be made by multiplying or dividing the numerator and denominator by the same number.
