1. Factors, Common Multiples, and Common Factors

  • A factor of a number divides it exactly.
  • The factors of 24 are 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 12, and 24.
  • Numbers that are multiples of both 3 and 5 are common multiples.

2. Prime Numbers and Composite Numbers

  • Prime numbers have exactly two factors: 1 and the number itself.
  • The first few prime numbers are 2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13, 17, and 19.
  • Composite numbers have more than two factors.

3. The Sieve of Eratosthenes

  • The Sieve of Eratosthenes is a method for listing primes by circling and crossing out numbers.
  • First cross out 1 because it is neither prime nor composite.
  • Circle 2 and cross out its multiples.

4. Co-prime Numbers

  • Two numbers are co-prime if they have no common factor other than 1.
  • The pair 4 and 9 is co-prime.
  • The pair 15 and 39 is not co-prime.
