1. Compass, Circle, and Radius

  • A compass can be used to construct circles and their parts.
  • A point 4 cm from P, when the compass is opened to a fixed distance and rotated about P, traces a circle.
  • All the points of a circle are at the same distance from its centre.

  • A rectangle has opposite sides equal and all angles 90°.
  • A square has all sides equal and all angles 90°.
  • The blue sides AB and CD in rectangle ABCD are opposite sides because they lie opposite each other.

  • A square of side 6 cm can be constructed using a ruler and compass.
  • A rectangle can be constructed if the lengths of its sides are given.
  • A rectangle can also be constructed if one side and one diagonal are given.

  • A rectangle can be divided into two identical squares.
  • If two identical squares form a rectangle, then all the shorter lines are equal.
