Overview

Magnets attract some materials and repel or attract other magnets in special ways. A magnet has two poles, called the North pole and the South pole, and these poles always occur in pairs. Magnetism helps in finding directions, understanding attraction and repulsion, and using magnets in useful objec

Key Concepts

Materials attracted towards a magnet

Materials attracted towards a magnet are called magnetic materials. Iron, nickel, and cobalt are magnetic materials.

Materials not attracted towards a magnet

Materials not attracted towards a magnet are called non-magnetic materials.

A magnet has two poles

A magnet has two poles: North pole and South pole. Maximum iron filings stick near the ends of a bar magnet, so the poles are found there.

A single North pole or

A single North pole or a single South pole cannot exist. Even when a magnet is broken, both poles are present in every small piece.

A freely suspended magnet comes

A freely suspended magnet comes to rest along the north-south direction because Earth behaves like a giant magnet.

Learning Objectives

  • To identify magnetic and non-magnetic materials
  • To understand the poles of a magnet
  • To explain how a freely suspended magnet helps in finding directions
  • To distinguish between attraction and repulsion between magnets
  • To understand how a magnetic compass works
