- Sedimentation is the settling of the heavier insoluble component at the bottom of a liquid.
- Decantation is the removal of the liquid by tilting the vessel after sedimentation.
- Decantation is not a complete method because some solid may still remain mixed with the liquid.

- Magnetic separation is the separation of magnetic and non-magnetic substances using a magnet.
- Iron is a common magnetic substance.
