  • Any substance used to create an object is called a material.
  • Materials are types of matter used in the making of objects.
  • An object may be made of one material or many materials together.

2. Appearance of Materials

  • Materials can look different from one another.
  • Materials that have shiny surfaces are said to have lustre.
  • Metals such as iron, copper, zinc, aluminium and gold are lustrous materials.

3. Hardness and Softness

  • Materials that can be compressed or scratched easily are soft.
  • Materials that are difficult to compress or scratch are hard.
  • Hard and soft are relative properties, so comparison is important.

4. Transparent, Translucent and Opaque Materials

  • Materials through which things can be seen clearly are transparent.
  • Glass, water, air and cellophane paper are transparent materials.
  • Materials through which objects can be seen but not clearly are translucent.
