  • The mean is a measure of central tendency. It is found by adding all the values and dividing by the number of values.
  • The median is the middle value when the data is arranged in order.

  • A missing value can be found when the mean and the other values are known.
  • Use the average formula and substitute the known total and number of values.

  • When values repeat, each value must be counted according to its frequency.
  • Ignoring frequencies gives a wrong average. For the family size data, the naive average 6.5 is incorrect.
  • The correct average family size is 5.22.

  • A spreadsheet is like a digital notebook with rows and columns of cells.
  • Cells are named using column letters and row numbers.
