1. Mean and Median: Core Ideas
- The mean is a measure of central tendency. It is found by adding all the values and dividing by the number of values.
- The median is the middle value when the data is arranged in order.
- For two numbers, the average lies exactly halfway between them. The average of 3 and 7 is 5.
2. Finding the Unknown from the Mean
- A missing value can be found when the mean and the other values are known.
- Use the average formula and substitute the known total and number of values.
- For Coach Balwan’s wrestlers, the missing value is 43 kg.
3. Mean and Median with Frequencies
- When values repeat, each value must be counted according to its frequency.
- Ignoring frequencies gives a wrong average. For the family size data, the naive average 6.5 is incorrect.
- The correct average family size is 5.22.

- Cells are named using column letters and row numbers.
