1. Distributive Property: The Basic Idea

  • The distributive property of multiplication over addition is written as a(b + c) = ab + ac.
  • It means one number multiplies each term inside the bracket.
  • The reverse order also works: (a + b)c = ac + bc.

  • If one number in a product is increased by 1, the product increases by the other number.
  • For a product ab, if b is increased by 1, then a(b + 1) = ab + a.
  • The product increases by 23 when 27 is increased by 1 in 23 × 27.

  • The distributive property helps expand products of brackets.
  • If one bracket has a plus and the other has a minus, every term must be multiplied correctly.
  • The pattern works for (a + u)(b - v), (a - u)(b + v), and (a - u)(b - v).

4. Distributive Property with Three or More Terms

  • The distributive property is not limited to two terms inside a bracket.
  • Each term outside the bracket must multiply every term inside it.
  • This is useful in longer algebraic expressions.
