1. Area of rectangles and squares

  • Area is measured by counting unit squares.
  • Area of a rectangle equals length × width.
  • A 7 cm × 4 cm rectangle contains 28 unit squares.

2. Area of triangles

  • The area of a triangle is half the product of its base and height.
  • The formula works for all triangles, including triangles that cannot be enclosed by a rectangle with that base.
  • In identical rectangles, triangles like ΔXDC, ΔYDC, and ΔYBC each have exactly half the area of rectangle ABCD.

3. Area of any polygon

  • Any polygon can be divided into triangles.
  • Once a polygon is split into triangles, its area is found by adding the triangle areas.
  • This method works for quadrilaterals, pentagons, and other polygons.

4. Area of a parallelogram

  • A parallelogram can be dissected into a rectangle of equal area.
  • The process of cutting a figure into pieces and rearranging them to get a different figure of equal area is called dissection.
  • In the dissection, ΔAXD is moved to the position of ΔBYC.
