What happens when electric current flows through a conductor?

Answer

It produces a magnetic field around the conductor. This is called the magnetic effect of electric current. The effect stops when the current stops.

A current-carrying wire produces a magnetic field. The compass needle is a tiny magnet, so it turns when the magnetic field acts on it.
