Card 1Pressure and area

Why does a bag with broad straps feel more comfortable than a bag with narrow straps when both are equally heavy?

Answer

The same weight acts on a larger area with broad straps, so the pressure on the shoulders is smaller. Narrow straps act on a smaller area, so the pressure is higher and the bag hurts more.

Card 2

Answer

Card 3Definition of pressure

What is pressure?

Answer

Pressure is force per unit area. Only the force acting perpendicular to the surface is considered at this stage. Formula: Pressure = Force/Area.

Card 4

Answer

Pressure = Force/Area.

Card 5Numerical problem on pressure

A force of 100 N acts on a cardboard of area 2 m². What is the pressure?

Answer

Pressure = Force/Area = 100 N / 2 m² = 50 N/m². The pressure is 50 pascal, or 50 Pa.

Answer

Card 7Pressure in daily life

Why is it easier to drive a nail using its pointed end?

Answer

The pointed end touches a smaller area, so the pressure becomes higher. Higher pressure makes it easier for the nail to enter the wood.

Card 8
