1. Discovering the Invisible World

  • A curved piece of glass called a lens can make small objects look bigger.
  • Robert Hooke published Micrographia in 1665 and used a microscope that magnified objects 200 to 300 times.
  • Hooke observed a thin slice of cork made of many small empty spaces and called each space a cell.

2. Cell Structure and Differences

  • A typical cell has three main parts: cell membrane, cytoplasm, and nucleus.
  • The cell membrane encloses the cytoplasm and nucleus, separates one cell from another, and is porous.
  • The cytoplasm contains carbohydrates, proteins, fats, and mineral salts; most life processes take place there.
3

3. Microorganisms and Their Types

  • Microorganisms are living organisms too small to be seen with the naked eye.
  • They are found in water, soil, air, and even inside the body.
  • A microscope magnifies microorganisms so they can be seen.

4. Helpful Microorganisms in Daily Life

  • Lactobacillus feeds on lactose in milk, multiplies, and ferments milk to form curd.
