1. Rise and Fall of the Delhi Sultanate

  • The Delhi Sultanate was formed after the defeat of Prithviraj Chauhan in 1192.
  • It was ruled by five successive foreign dynasties of Turkic-Afghan origin: Mamluks, Khiljis, Tughlaqs, Sayyids, and Lodis.
  • Political instability was very high. Almost two out of three sultans seized power by eliminating their predecessor, so the average reign was hardly nine years.

2. Important Sultanate Rulers and Campaigns

  • Ala-ud-din Khilji conducted military campaigns over north and central India and repelled Mongol invasions.
  • He called himself ‘the second Alexander’ or Sikander Sani.
  • His slave-general Malik Kafur expanded the Sultanate southward and attacked several kingdoms and temple centres.

3. Regional Resistance and New Kingdoms

  • The Eastern Gangas in the east and the Hoysalas in the south resisted Delhi Sultanate expansion.
  • Narasimhadeva I of the Eastern Ganga kingdom repelled Sultanate invasions, defeated Delhi’s governor of Bengal, and built the Surya temple at Konark.
  • The Musunuri Nayakas formed a confederacy of over 75 chieftains and expelled Muhammad bin Tughlaq’s army from Warangal around 1330-1336.

4. Vijayanagara Empire

  • Harihara and Bukka were former governors under Muhammad bin Tughlaq before they rejected Delhi’s authority.
  • They founded the Vijayanagara Empire in the 14th century.
  • The empire became a major power in southern India.
