1. Meaning and growth of colonialism

  • Colonialism is the practice where one country takes control of another region and imposes its own systems.
  • It is not a recent event; it can be traced back to the great empires of the 1st millennium BCE and to religious conversions in the 1st millennium CE.
  • From the 15th century onward, European powers expanded across Asia, Africa, the Americas, Australia, and many Pacific islands.

  • Vasco da Gama arrived at Kappad near Kozhikode in May 1498, beginning European colonisation in India.
  • He later seized, tortured, and killed Indian merchants and bombarded Calicut from the sea during his second voyage.
  • The Portuguese captured Goa in 1510, and Goa became the capital of their colony in India.

  • The English East India Company was granted a royal charter by Queen Elizabeth I, which gave it special powers such as raising a private army.
  • The British conquest of India was gradual, calculated, and often disguised as trade.
  • The British used the strategy of divide and rule by exploiting rivalries among rulers and communities.

  • The East India Company collected revenue from Bengal, Bihar, and Odisha after Plassey.
  • Clive described Bengal as the paradise of the earth.
  • The Bengal famine of 1770 to 1772 killed nearly one-third of the population, or an estimated 10 million people.
