What is an Arithmetic Progression?
- An AP is a list of numbers where each term is obtained by adding a FIXED number to the preceding term.
- This fixed number is called the Common Difference (d). It can be positive, negative, or zero.
- The first term is denoted by 'a' (or a₁), the second term by a₂, and so on.
nth Term (General Term) of an AP
- The nth term formula lets you find ANY term of the AP without listing all terms.
- Formula: aₙ = a + (n-1)d, where a = first term, d = common difference, n = position of the term.
- The last term of a finite AP is often denoted by 'l'. If the AP has m terms, then l = aₘ = a + (m-1)d.
Sum of First n Terms of an AP
- The sum of the first n terms of an AP is denoted by Sₙ.
- Main Formula: Sₙ = n/2 × [2a + (n-1)d]. Use this when a and d are known.
- Alternative Formula: Sₙ = n/2 × (a + l). Use this when the first term (a) and last term (l) are known.
Problem-Solving Strategies and Special Cases
- ASSUMING TERMS IN AP: For 3 terms in AP, take them as (a-d), a, (a+d). Their sum = 3a, which simplifies calculations.
- For 4 terms in AP, take them as (a-3d), (a-d), (a+d), (a+3d). Their sum = 4a.
- For 5 terms in AP, take them as (a-2d), (a-d), a, (a+d), (a+2d). Their sum = 5a.
