Formulas and Key Relations
Multiplication of a Fraction by a Whole Number
Formula
n × (a/b) = (n × a) / b
Example
3 × (2/7) = (3 × 2) / 7 = 6/7
Multiplication of a Fraction by a Fraction
Formula
(a/b) × (c/d) = (a × c) / (b × d)
Example
(2/3) × (4/5) = (2 × 4) / (3 × 5) = 8/15
Multiplication of Decimal Numbers
Example
1.2 × 2.5 → 12 × 25 = 300; total decimal places = 1 + 1 = 2; answer = 3.00 = 3
Example
2.5 × 1.25 → 25 × 125 = 3125; decimal places = 1 + 2 = 3; answer = 3.125
Key relations
So '1/2 of 20' means 1/2 × 20 = 10.
When multiplying two fractions, multiply the numerators together and the denominators together: (a/b) × (c/d) = (a×c)/(b×d).
